What is Zero liquid discharge (ZLD)?

Definition

Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) is a wastewater approach in which an industrial site treats and recovers its effluent so that no liquid leaves the premises. Water is recycled back into the process and the remaining dissolved solids are concentrated into a solid residue. ZLD saves water but uses significant energy and needs careful measurement.

What it is

A ZLD system usually follows conventional effluent treatment with further stages: filtration, reverse osmosis to recover most of the water, then evaporators and crystallizers that concentrate the reject stream until only solids remain.

The recovered water returns to cooling towers, boilers, cleaning or process use, which reduces fresh water intake. The thermal stages are energy intensive, so a ZLD plant's water benefit should be weighed against its energy and chemical use.

Whether a plant needs ZLD depends on its sector, location and regulator. Some authorities require it for certain industries or water-stressed areas, so operators should check their own consent conditions.

Who it applies to / where it is used

ZLD is common in India for textiles, distilleries, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and some food and beverage plants, and it is used in water-stressed regions worldwide. Plant heads, environment managers and sustainability teams own it.

How it is measured / what evidence it needs

Evidence for ZLD is a closed water balance: what came in, what was recovered, what was lost to evaporation and what left as solids, with no liquid outflow.

  • Fresh water intake by source
  • ETP, RO and evaporator inflow and recovered water
  • Recovered water returned to each use
  • Energy and steam used by RO and thermal stages
  • Outfall flow, which should be zero, and solids generated

How Aqueduct helps

Aqueduct keeps the site water balance closed in real time, so any liquid leaving the site or any unexplained loss shows up immediately.

  • aQ WaterGuard balances intake, treatment, reuse and losses on the digital twin
  • aQ EnergySmart reports energy per cubic meter recovered
  • Alerts flag flow at any outfall or a balance that stops reconciling
  • Measured records support the plant's own consent and disclosure reporting, which the plant files
Questions

Zero liquid discharge (ZLD): common questions

It means a site releases no liquid effluent. Wastewater is treated and recycled, and dissolved solids are concentrated into a solid residue for disposal.

Typically effluent treatment, then filtration and reverse osmosis to recover water, then evaporators and crystallizers to turn the remaining concentrate into solids.

It depends on the industry, location and regulator. Some authorities require ZLD for certain sectors or areas. Check your consent conditions and current local rules.

With a metered water balance that shows intake, recovery and reuse, and no flow at any outfall. Continuous records are stronger evidence than periodic samples.
