What is ISO 14064?

Definition

ISO 14064 is a set of international standards for greenhouse gas accounting. Part 1 covers quantifying and reporting emissions and removals at organization level, Part 2 covers greenhouse gas projects, and Part 3 covers the validation and verification of greenhouse gas statements.

What it is

ISO 14064-1 specifies how an organization designs, develops and reports a greenhouse gas inventory, including boundaries, categories of emissions, quantification methods and documentation. It is consistent in principle with the GHG Protocol.

ISO 14064-2 applies to projects designed to reduce emissions or increase removals, covering baselines and monitoring. ISO 14064-3 sets out how validators and verifiers assess greenhouse gas statements. Verification bodies are often accredited under ISO 14065.

The standards do not set reduction targets. They define how to count and how to check the count. That makes them useful underneath other commitments: a company may set targets under one framework, disclose under another, and use ISO 14064 to give investors and regulators confidence that the numbers are complete, consistent and accurate.

Who it applies to / where it is used

ISO 14064 is used by companies preparing verified inventories, by project developers, and by verification bodies. It is referenced in voluntary programs and some regulatory schemes as a basis for verification.

How it is measured / what evidence it needs

Verification depends on a clear trail from source data to reported totals.

  • Organizational and reporting boundaries
  • Activity data by source, with measurement methods
  • Emission factors and calculation records
  • Data quality management and uncertainty assessment
  • A verification statement from the verifier

How Aqueduct helps

Aqueduct supplies metered inputs with an audit trail for verification. The company prepares the inventory and the verifier issues the statement.

  • Metered energy and fuel by site with timestamps and source records
  • Data gap and anomaly checks before the inventory is compiled
  • Baselines and monitoring data for reduction projects through aQ EnergySmart
  • Exports through aQ Assurance with the trail verifiers ask for
Questions

ISO 14064: common questions

Part 1 covers organization-level inventories, Part 2 covers greenhouse gas projects, and Part 3 covers validation and verification of greenhouse gas statements.

They are consistent in principle. Many organizations use GHG Protocol methods and have their inventory verified to ISO 14064-3.

An independent validation and verification body, often accredited under ISO 14065, carries out verification.

Aqueduct supplies metered activity data with a clear audit trail. The organization compiles the inventory and the verifier issues the statement.
