What is ISO 14001?

Definition

ISO 14001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for an environmental management system. It helps organizations identify their environmental aspects, meet compliance obligations, set objectives and continually improve environmental performance using a plan, do, check, act approach. Organizations can be certified against it by accredited bodies.

What it is

ISO 14001 is the most widely used environmental management standard. It asks organizations to understand how their activities affect the environment, such as energy use, water use, emissions and waste, and to manage those aspects systematically.

Like other ISO management system standards, it covers context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. It requires monitoring and measurement of significant environmental aspects.

The standard does not set performance levels. It requires a system that drives improvement and evidence that it works.

Who it applies to

Organizations of any size and sector, including manufacturers, hospitals, airports, universities and facility service providers. It is voluntary, though customers and tenders often ask for it.

Facility teams often own much of the measured evidence, because buildings and plant drive energy and water use.

What evidence it needs

Auditors look for monitoring, objectives and improvement evidence.

Measured data is stronger than estimates because it shows trends, supports root cause analysis when something goes wrong, and makes it clear whether an action actually changed performance.

  • Monitoring of significant aspects such as energy and water
  • Objectives and progress against them
  • Records of nonconformities and corrective actions
  • Management review records

How Aqueduct helps

Aqueduct supplies measured resource use and verified improvements as objective evidence.

  • aQ EnergySmart and aQ WaterGuard metering across sites
  • aQ AirSafe records where air quality is a significant aspect
  • Leaks, waste and faults routed to your CMMS with verified closure
  • aQ Assurance exports for audits and management review
