Joint Commission EC

Joint Commission Environment of Care, with utility records measured continuously

The Environment of Care (EC) chapter of the Joint Commission accreditation standards asks hospitals to manage risks from utility systems, maintain safe air pressure, temperature and humidity in critical areas, run a water management program and test emergency power. Aqueduct supplies continuous measured records for those systems, with excursions flagged and closed. Your facility team and surveyors handle accreditation.

What the Environment of Care chapter is and who it applies to

The Joint Commission accredits hospitals and other healthcare organizations in the United States, and its accreditation is widely used to show compliance with Medicare and Medicaid conditions of participation. The Environment of Care chapter covers the physical environment: safety, security, hazardous materials, fire safety, medical equipment and utility systems. Standards such as EC.02.05.01 address utility systems risks, and related standards cover emergency power testing and monitoring of conditions in the environment.

Elements of performance under these standards include maintaining pressure relationships, air exchange rates and filtration in areas designed to control airborne contaminants, managing temperature and humidity in areas that need it, having a water management program to reduce the risk of Legionella and other waterborne pathogens, and inspecting and testing emergency power. Surveyors ask for records. Standard numbers and elements change, so check the current accreditation manual for your program.

How it works

How to prepare Environment of Care records for a survey

01

Map critical spaces and systems

List operating rooms, isolation rooms, sterile processing and other critical areas, and the systems that serve them.

02

Connect what you already monitor

Read existing BMS and room monitor points into Aqueduct, then add wireless sensors where coverage is missing.

03

Set limits per space

Enter each space's required conditions so readings are judged against the right limit.

04

Run the response loop

Route excursions to the responsible team and close each one with an action and a confirming reading.

05

Rehearse the tracer

Pull a room's history, a water control point and a generator test record as a surveyor would, and fix gaps before the visit.

What stays with your hospital

Accreditation is earned by the hospital. Aqueduct supplies records.

Management plans

Utility and environment management plans, risk assessments and policies are written by your team.

Inspection and testing

Physical inspection, maintenance and testing activities are carried out by your staff and vendors.

Accreditation

The Joint Commission surveys and accredits. Aqueduct does not accredit or certify.

Questions

Common questions

It is the part of the accreditation standards that covers a healthcare organization's physical environment, including utility systems, fire safety and medical equipment. Aqueduct supplies continuous records for utility systems and critical space conditions.

EC.02.05.01 addresses management of utility systems risks. Its elements of performance include ventilation in critical areas and water management. Check the current manual for exact wording.

Most use BMS trends, standalone loggers or manual logs. Aqueduct brings these into one record per space and flags any period outside the limits you set.

Its standards include a water management program to reduce the risk of Legionella and other waterborne pathogens. Aqueduct supplies measurements at instrumented control points.

Where meters are fitted on the generator or transfer switch, Aqueduct records energy, load and run time during each test. Inspection and test procedures stay with your team.

No. The Joint Commission accredits hospitals. Aqueduct supplies measured records your team uses during surveys.

Yes. Aqueduct is used by one of India's top hospital chains across 22 hospitals and 9 clinics. The same records model applies to US hospitals preparing for Joint Commission surveys.
